Zahraa Zawawi is as an architect and urban planner. A bachelor's degree in architecture was earned from Birzeit University in 1996, followed by a Master's in urban and regional planning from An-Najah National University in 2000, and a PhD in urban studies was obtained from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 2012. Several urban planning and urban conservation plans, along with urban-related studies in Palestine, were worked on between 1996 and 2013. The position of head of the urban studies program at Bard Al-Quds University, along with the role of visiting assistant professor, was held between 2014 and 2016. Since 2016, a position as an assistant professor has been held at An-Najah National University in the Department of Urban Planning Engineering, and the role of program head was undertaken between 2017 and 2019. Furthermore, the presidency of the national ICOMOS committee in Palestine was held between 2018 and 2020. In 2021, a new position was assumed as the director of the Architecture Conservation Unit at An-Najah National University.
My research interests lie at the intersection of architecture, urban design, cultural heritage and sustainable development, with a particular focus on the creation of resilient and inclusive urban environments.
My teaching approach is rooted in fostering critical thinking, creativity and a deep understanding of the social and environmental responsibilities of architects and urban designers. I aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become innovative and ethical professionals. My teaching interests include Sustainable Architecture and Urbanism.
