This study explores the formal innovation in the discourse of Tamim Al-Barghouti’s poem “A Natural Matter” and its relation to the form of content, revealing the harmony between the syntactic and semantic structures of the text.
Employing narrative semiotics developed by A. J. Greimas and further advanced by Joseph Courtés, the study concludes that the poem’s formal innovation creates a correspondence between the form of expression and the form of content. The traditional vertical form embodies the state of siege imposed on the nation, whereas the free verse form conveys programs of manipulation aimed at breaking the siege and achieving liberation.
