This three-days training introduces participants to modern concepts of sustainable waste management as a driver of environmental responsibility, economic efficiency, and academic research.

Unlike conventional “waste disposal,” the training emphasizes waste as a resource within the framework of circular economy principles: Reduce – Reuse – Recycle – Recover (4Rs).

Special focus will be given to the Mauritanian context, considering:

  • Rapid urbanization in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou
  • Municipal solid waste challenges (organic waste, plastics, demolition waste)
  • Medical Waste Management: Types, sources and quantities, health and environmental damages
  • Limited recycling infrastructure and the need for innovative low-cost solutions
  • Opportunities for academic research and pilot projects in collaboration with local municipalities, NGOs, and industry

The training is interactive, combining lectures, case studies, group discussions, and problem-solving exercises. Participants will leave with both conceptual understanding and practical tools to apply solid waste and medical waste management strategies in research, teaching, and local projects
