In light of wars and disasters worldwide, and particularly in the Arab world, those displaced by the 2023 Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip face immense hardship in securing suitable shelter. Often, temporary housing units are extremely limited in size and fail to provide the basic necessities for a dignified life. Therefore, this problem demands the development of design plans and solutions to address the basic needs of displaced persons in temporary housing units and enhance the user experience. This is where the role of the interior designer becomes crucial: finding solutions and manipulating interior spaces to meet the desires and needs of users within the limited available area, transforming them into comfortable and functional spaces. This must be done while considering economic and environmental factors, the users' cultural backgrounds, and all anticipated challenges. Consequently, there is a need to raise awareness about the importance of smart furniture in improving the user experience in temporary housing units.
This study aimed to identify the importance of interior design in meeting the needs of displaced persons in limited-space temporary housing units, as well as the role of smart furniture in enhancing the user experience of these units, thereby improving the overall quality of their interior spaces.
The study reached several conclusions and recommendations, the most important of which is that employing modern smart technology in the interior design of temporary housing units contributes to enhancing the efficiency of these units and makes them more suitable for the needs of the displaced, as it improves the user experience of the interior space. The study also recommended taking into account the selection of interior furniture that does not require a long time in design and implementation, and is characterized by ease of dismantling, installation and transportation, and achieving privacy and taking into account the cultural and social customs and traditions and religious teachings of the displaced people of the Gaza Strip.
