Conventional agricultural irrigation scheme currently in use is a
major water consumer due to dissipation and drainage. It can result
in over or under irrigation, which could have a negative impact on
crop yield and quality. In this paper, we provide the architectural
design and implementation of a smart irrigation system that uses
a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) based on Arduino and XBee
technologies. The system monitors agricultural conditions and automatically
controls the soil moisture level in the root zone to keep
it within its optimal range. The implementation of the WSN is provided.
A comparison of the amount of water consumed between
the smart system and the conventional irrigation approach are
discussed. Our results obtained using a pilot prototype indicates
that a significant amount of water-saving can be obtained when
using a smart irrigation system instead of the conventional approach.
