Biography

Raed joined the Faculty of Law at An-Najah in 2010 as a lecturer and the director of the UNESCO Chair on Human Rights and Democracy. While serving with UNESCO, Raed created and facilitated the first Human Rights Film Festival that featured films on a range of topics relevant to the Palestinian context.

Shortly after joining An-Najah University, Raed established the legal clinic to provide students insight into real lawyering skills, including interviewing, client counseling and negotiation, and also the nuances of trial work. He envisioned the clinic as a compliment to legal education that would simultaneously provide services and free access to marginalized segments of the population. Pro-bono work as a traditional duty of the legal profession, Raed believes, also builds solidarity with underserved people in the community.

Raed also drafted and added a new course to the university’s legal curriculum, titled Refugee Law. Considering that more than one half of Palestinians live as refugees, the class surveys the existing laws of protection for those fleeing danger and facing persecution in their home countries. While he has spent many years working and studying abroad, most of his work has been dedicated to Palestine. He worked as the director of the Palestinian Relief Association in France, where he facilitated finances for local projects in Palestine, and also volunteered with a number of local organizatons.

Currently, as part of his doctoral dissertation, Raed is researching the legal basis for the right to protect and the right of return under the International Law. He hopes to continue teaching and generating new ideas for the legal curriculum at An-Najah.
