Dr. Jehad Hamamreh’s Research Recognized and Adopted by ISO, the world's largest international standardization body

In a significant endorsement of his scholarly impact, Dr. Jehad M. Hamamreh, Founder and Director of WISLABi.com and A. Professor at An-Najah National University and Antalya Bilim University, has received formal recognition from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the world's largest international standardization body.

On August 2, 2026, Dr. Kingston ZHANG, Convenor of the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 6/AG 4 “MCS Innovation” advisory group, officially communicated that Dr. Hamamreh’s peer-reviewed article—“The Information-Theoretic Gap: Reclaiming First Principles in Wireless Communications Research”—has been adopted as ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 6/AG 4 Document N 547.

The adoption means Dr. Hamamreh’s work is now an official reference document within ISO’s ongoing study into innovative Modulation and Coding Schemes (iMCS) for 6G physical layer specifications.


What This Recognition Means

The ISO advisory group’s mission is to study challenges in MCS schemes, identify technological gaps, and propose standardization projects for next-generation communication systems—including 5G and 6G mobile communications.

In his official letter, Dr. ZHANG wrote:

“Your article contains some interesting information and viewpoints that are useful for AG 4’s study on iMCS-6G. You argue that the field of wireless communications suffers from an ‘information-theoretic vacuum’—a widening gap between engineering practice and foundational theory.”

He further added:

“Your article points out that Shannon Theory is not the end but the start, and the search for the new limit should be the future goal. We agree with you, and it is exactly what AG 4 is doing.”

This direct alignment between Dr. Hamamreh’s academic thesis and the strategic direction of the world’s largest standardization body underscores the timeliness and fundamental importance of his research.


About the Research

In his article, published on July 9, 2026, in the RS-OJICT open-access journal, Dr. Hamamreh offers a rigorous critique of contemporary wireless research trends. He argues that the field suffers from an “information-theoretic vacuum”—a growing disconnect between engineering practice and first-principles theory.

The paper examines three prominent but problematic research directions:

  • Terahertz communications, which often ignore atmospheric physics and practical power limitations;

  • Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) , which frequently violate conservation of energy principles; and

  • Black-box machine learning applications, which replace provable algorithms with uninterpretable approximations.

Dr. Hamamreh calls for a return to Shannon’s foundational methodology: first establish fundamental physical limits, then develop practical systems that approach them. He proposes alternative research directions, including joint communication-computation frameworks, semantic/goal-oriented communication, and thermodynamic limits of information processing.
