Course Description

This clerkship provides the means by which the students will extend their clinical knowledge and skills.  The clinical attachment with the consultant in the ward and outpatient department will present numerous opportunities for learning.  The student must take and fully use these opportunities to gain maximum benefit from the program and to progress satisfactorily in the course. The clinical clerkships include clinical attachments in the following specialties: Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Oncology & Hematology and Nephrology. Within each of the rotations the student will be required to produce a detailed evaluation of a wide range of patients; evaluate critically drug therapy and increase the effectiveness of the pharmacy input to the ward.

Course Objectives

To study rational drug treatment at the patients' bedside and to become familiar with common protocols of drug treatment and the reasons for their choice. The course will include learning and experimenting with treatment practices and procedures in different disease conditions in different departments. Before entering the department, the students take concentrated introductory courses which provide them with the basic principles of drug treatment from the perspective of clinical pharmacy. Within the clerkship itself, several general goals are aimed at developing and enhancing student's skills in implementing the philosophy of clinical pharmacy practice in the hospital. Initially, the students will be familiarized with the theoretical aspects of clinical pharmacy in general, and with the implementation of their knowledge through bedside counseling during the work round in several departments in Hospitals.
