Course Description

This course introduces students to a comprehensive process in pharmaceutical care in an inpatient/outpatient setting including assessment,data collection,identification of drug related problems, therapeutic planning for drug related problems and therapeutic plan follow-ups.

Course Objectives

Introduces the students to definitions and terminology in pharmaceutical care and to be able to design a pharmacotherapy workup process and to communicate recommendations in inpatient/outpatient settings. It also introduces the students to an experience in case presentations utilizing the pharmacotherapy workup process learned through the course.

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

a-  Knowledge and Understanding:

a.1. define pharmaceutical care practice and it's impact on patient's drug therapy

a.2. define the activities and responsibilities in the patient care process that includes assessment,care plan and follow up

a.3. define the patient's role and it's impact on drug therapy

a.4. recognize the responsibilities of the pharmaceutical care provider as a member of the health care team.

b- Intellectual Skills.

b.1. Compare between rational and irrational drug therapy

b.2  establish a system problem solving approach to the selection of therapeutic regimens bases upon specific patient needs

 b.3. determine the drug related needs and solve drug related problems for specific patients.

c- Professional and Practical Skills:

c.1. apply communication skills learned throughout the course required to conduct a patient interview

c.2. assess patient's medication experience and devise a plan to improve patient's medication experience

c.3. device rational and practical solutions to drug related problems in patients with selected diseases

c.4.design a pharmacotherapy workup process for patients with selected diseases and drug related problems and present a case presentation

 d- General and transferable skills:

d.1. Search Internet data base for guidelines on treatment for specified diseases
