Course Description

This course provides an introduction to medications that are dispensed over the counter ( without a medical prescription), for selected conditions, and counseling patients on the proper use of these medication.

 

 

Course Objectives

the student will be become familiar with over the counter medications, assess if self treatment is appropriate with these medications, set therapeutic goals, provide patient's education and counseling and patient follow-ups. Students will develop skills as they present and discuss selected over the counter medications and how therapy correlate with the pathophysiology of the disease and the monitoring parameters necessary for evaluation of drug therapy.

 

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

a-  Knowledge and Understanding:

a.1. Identify health conditions requiring over the counter medication.

a.2. list medications available on the market over the counter

a.3. determine if self treatment with OTC products is appropriate

a.4. recognize the need for primary care referrals when appropriate

 

b- Intellectual Skills.

b.1. design individualized therapeutic plans with OTC medications for special population.

b.2  .demonstrate an understanding of the pharmacology of OTC medications

 b.3. apply the information learned to provide  non pharmacological treatment and  pharmacological treatment with OTC medications

c- Professional and Practical Skills:

c.1. plan therapeutic goals and end points with OTC medications

c.2. specify follow up plans for patients

c.3. apply learned information in providing appropriate patient counseling on OTC medications)

 d.- General and transferable skills:

d.1. search internet on selected health conditions and treatment with OTC medications
