Course Description

An elective course devoted for the PhD level. The course treats solid state and semiconductor chemistry (both organic and inorganic materials) in a rigorous manner.  The course involves lectures and student participation. Bonding theories, structure and applications of solid materials are all rigorously included. Metallic conductors, semiconductors and super-conductors are included. Basics of p-n junction, PVs, LEDs, OLEDs, PLEDs, MOSFETs, CNTFETs, Li ion insertion batteries are included together with state-of-the-art techniques and developments. Applications in modern analytical chemistry, instrumental analysis, physical chemistry, organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry (renewable energy, sensors, conducting polymers) in addition to other modern areas are included. Advanced characterizations such as:  XRD, SEM & TEM, AFM, and others will be included.

Course Objectives

The course enriches the student with in depth-knowledge of solid-state chemistry and semiconductor technology. Basic chemical principles of solid state, bonding & structure and contemporary applications are rigorously treated, together with advanced analytical and characterization techniques. The course involves self-studies in the way of self-assignment, writing a report and power point presenting. The course enables the student to find specific points for future research in various areas of organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry.

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences
  1. Find and review sources in the areas of advanced materials, semiconductors and solar energy
  2. Select specific areas of contemporary subjects in the area of solid state and semiconductor technology and undertake in-depth reading (such as thin films, chemical sensors, thermal sensors, electrochemical sensors, conducting/semconducting polymers, etc.) in varous areas of chemistry
  3. Present powerpoint presentations before audience on own selected topics

Write and submit a review article and a research proposal in the field

Textbook and References
  1. Solid state chemistry textbooks (such as those of Philips, Adam, and many others)
