The Role of Al-Mosul’s Seljuk in the Crusaders’ Wars

Professor Dr. IhsanDeek

An-Najah National University, Palestine

A violent conflict in the  fifth and sixth centuriesAH took place between the IslamicAbbasid caliphate in Baghdad and the Ubaydicaliphatein Cairo, among the sultans of the Muslims Seljuk themselves, among the ministers of the Ubaid caliphs themselves, and among the Ismailia, Seljuk and Abbasid caliphs, as well as the on-going conflict between the Seljuks and the Byzantine Empire in Asia. All that tore the East politically and socially, and in all other spheres of life That, consequently, helped the Crusades achieve their goals easily. The Crusaders’ first campaign managed to establish kingdoms in the Muslim Orient (the Kingdom of Edessa (Urfa today, a large city in the Republic of Turkey) the Kingdom of Antioch (today a large city in the Republic of Turkey) and the Kingdom of Jerusalem in Palestine.

The Muslim Orient was not able to absorb the disaster that befell it quickly, as the differences and conflictsremainedardent. However, the princes of the Seljuk appearedin the Upper Mesopotamia, specifically in the Mosul. They led to a counter-attack against the Crusades, and they were able to halt the Crusaders’ advance toward the heart of the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad. The Jihad of MuslimSeljuk against the Crusaderscontinueduntil the Atabeg Imad ad-DinZinkimanaged to defeat them when he liberated the City of Edessa(539 AH). That victory made the Crusaders contend that their fate in the East is at a crossroad. Therefore, they prepared a new crusade.

This paper deals with the role of the Al-Mosul’s Seljuk in the Crusades as follows:

Second – The jihad of the Mosul’s governors of Krbouka, theJkremc and the governor of Mardin and Diyarbakir against the Crusaders.

Third- The impact of the Seljuk princes Jihad in the protection of the Islamic Orient.

Additionally, the research tries to explain thetoday’s internationaldispute on the Islamic Orient.
