Electric fields in the cathode fall region of a glow discharge are accurately measured in a small volume defined by the intersection of two laser beams. The fields are determined from linear Stark effects in Rydberg levels. The Rydberg atoms are produced via a two-step laser excitation and detected with optogalvanic effects.
