Abstract

This study aimed to explore the impact of modern studio technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) software on the identity of the Palestinian folk singer, focusing on the experience of artist Nouman Al-Jalmawi as a case study representing the authentic voice of Palestinian folk heritage. The research was structured into four integrated chapters. The first chapter analyzed the evolution of sound recording technologies and the role of AI in reshaping the singing voice, tracing how these tools have advanced beyond mere traditional recording to enable extensive voice modification. The second chapter examined the characteristics of the Palestinian folk singer and the style of performance within the traditional wedding setting, emphasizing the deep interconnection between cultural identity and the social context of performance. The third chapter presented a comparative analysis, through listening and critical examination, between a live performance by Nouman Al-Jalmawi and a technologically processed studio recording, highlighting differences in vocal expression and the resulting impact on the singer’s artistic identity. In the fourth chapter, the study concluded with findings that underscore the significance of adopting modern technologies and AI software as developmental tools that can enrich performance, while cautioning against distorting the vocal and heritage identity of the folk artist. Consequently, the study recommends striking a careful balance between technological innovation and the preservation of heritage authenticity, urging cultural institutions to support this approach in order to ensure that the Palestinian folk voice remains vibrant with its genuine identity and spirit in the face of contemporary technological transformations.
