The study aimed to examine the relationship between mental health and certain variables, specifically smoking and energy drink consumption, among high school students in Nablus Governorate. A descriptive research design was employed, utilizing the Mental Health Inventory developed by Leonard R. Derogatis and adapted to the Palestinian context by Thabet (2012). A random sample of 300 students participated in the study.
The results revealed statistically significant positive associations between smoking and somatic symptoms, depression, and anxiety, indicating that higher smoking levels were linked to increased mental health problems. Similarly, energy drink consumption was significantly associated with somatic symptoms, depression, and anxiety, with higher consumption corresponding to greater symptom severity.
In light of these findings, the study recommends raising awareness about the negative impact of smoking and energy drinks on adolescents’ mental health. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of developing preventive programs to promote mental well-being among students at all educational levels, particularly in high school.
