Background: Ecballium elaterium is a Mediterranean plant that grows wild in Palestine and is reported to have a wide range of biological activities.
Methods: In the ongoing study, the total phenol content using Folin–Ciocalteu assay, antioxidant activity using DPPH assay and anticancer activity using MTT and LDH assays against skin melanoma (B16–F1) cell line of the E. elaterium leaf aqueous extract were evaluated.
Results: The estimated phenol content by Folin-Ciocalteu method was equal to 48.5 mg/g in GA equivalent. Moreover, the recorded DPPH scavenging power of E. elaterium aqueous extract (27.8 ± 0.13 %) with 66.2 ± 0.41 µg/mL IC50 value. Additionally, the cytotoxic and cytostatic anticancer activity of this extract against skin melanoma was determined using MTT and LDH assays. Regarding the obtained MTT results, the aqoueus extract from E. elaterium was not significantly cytotoxic or cytostatic effective compared to the control, but still a significant difference between the extract cytostatic and cytotoxic effect. Furthermore, LDH data showed that this extract significantly worked as a cytotoxic and cytostatic agent with no significant difference between its cytotoxic and cytostatic activity.
