Abstract:
This study is concerned with analyzing the parenthetical insertion in the Holy Qur’an by proposing a method that clarifies how one or more clause can be embedded into the Qur’anic context without affecting the original syntactic structure, to achieve a rhetorical goals such as emphasis, clarification, alerting, and highlighting certain meanings that benefit the listener.
The research traces the development of this techniques from the early interest among the linguists such as Al-Farra, Ibn Faris, and Ibn Jinni to its subsequent scholars stating with AlTabari, Alwahdi, Alzamakhshari, Abu Hayyan, Alrazi, and Ibn Ashour whose interpretation were characterized by its accuracy in tracing the parenthetically inserted clauses.
Moreover, the study highlights that the parenthetical insertion constitutes a distinct aspect of the Qur’anic science of correlation (between the verses and/or surah of the Qur’an) as it connects the verses to the context in which it is mentioned, and to the main theme of the surah, which proves the text coherence and its inimitable rhetorical power, thereby weakening the claims of certain orientalists who contend that some verses are out of their context and mark it as a useless insertion.
Finally, the study presents recommendations that call for deepening the research in tracing the parenthetical verses, and revealing its suitability with their context, then further exploring the development of the parenthetical insertion as it has a great influence on understanding and elucidating the Qur’anic text and its correlated coherence.
