Abstract

Metal corrosion is an important economic problem globally. One of the best ways to protect metal surfaces from corrosion is the use of corrosion inhibitors, especially non-toxic xanthenbenzoate derivatives namely: methyl 2-(6-hydroxy-3-oxo-3H-xanthen-9-yl)benzoate (MHXB) and ethyl 2-(6-hydroxy-3-oxo-3H-xanthen-9-yl)benzoate (EHXB). Toxicity of both compounds was evaluated in vivo technical. This study to assessed anticorrosion properties of both inhibitor compounds (MHXB and EHXB) on mild steel(MS) in 1 M hydrochloric acid solution by way of the potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), as well as the Energy Dispersive X-rays (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques and UV–Visible. The results of the methods used indicate that increasing the concentration of the inhibitor compounds improves the effectiveness of inhibition. whereas the inhibition efficiency orders for xanthene benzoate derivatives are MHXB > EHXB with the highest inhibiting efficiency respectively of 95.0 and 90.0 percent for 10−4 M. Enhancement of inhibition performance in electrochemical techniques and increase in Rp values in impedance and mixed nature of the inhibition in polarization measurement reveals the best inhibition capacity of MHXB and EHXB over the MS. The proposed for the corrosion inhibition mechanism and the process followed the kinetic/thermodynamic model of El-Awady. Quantum chemical calculations using the Density Functional Theory (DFT) method and molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) suggest a good agreement with the experimental results.
