Abstract

The research addresses the distinct role of metaphor in identifying the personality of Ibn Taymiyyah, Sheikh (scholar) of Islam, through the poetry in which praise and lamentations were said. And this comes in two axes:

• The first axis: the definition of analogy in general, and more specifically of metaphor, and a summary of Ibn Taymiyyah’s biography and the most prominent characteristics of his era.
• The second axis: the effect of metaphor in identifying the personality of the scholar Ibn Taymiyyah and in painting a portrait of his life and his death.

The research demonstrates the factors from which poets derived their metaphors in portraying the character of Ibn Taymiya, while also indicating the similarity of those metaphors with what was mentioned in the biography of Ibn Taymiya in a rhetorical style that reveals the people’s love for him and their condolences for his parting.
