The Role of Hospital Information System (HIS) on the Improvement of Pharmaceutical Care Services in Palestinian Public Hospitals Raya SAWALHA Ankara University, [email protected] Prof.Dr.Afsun Ezel ESATOĞLU2 Ankara University, [email protected] ABSTRACT The pharmacy profession has gone through several shifts in practice from compoundingtodispensing, to clinical pharmacy, and finally, to pharmaceutical care. Pharmaceutical care is responsible for the provision of drug therapy for the purpose of achieving definite outcomes that improve a patient’s quality of life.Implementation of pharmaceutical care has been reported to be hindered by logistical barriers such as inability to access patients’ medical records. Using the Hospital Information System (HIS) helps health care professionals in general and hospital pharmacists in specific to have access to patient’s medical recordsand to document their work. The main purpose of this study is to find out the effect of using the Hospital Information System in Palestinian public hospitals in the West Bank on improving the pharmaceutical care services provided by hospital pharmacists, by having access to patient’s medical record throughout the system and their ability to document their work throughout specific area on the system. This study is descriptive in which pharmacists working in 13 Public hospitals in the West bank \Palestine were interviewed. Pharmacists were interviewed about having access to patient’s medical records, documenting their interventions, relating the findings with having or not having a HIS. Although HIS has been entered recently into the Palestinian public hospitals, some hospitals are still not used to the system. Many hospital pharmacists are practicing pharmaceutical care intentionally, their interventions efforts are not being documented, as a result not noticed by other health care professionals and decision makers. Some hospital pharmacists are writing their notes, documenting their interventions throughout the nursing note in the HIS, and not having a specific area in the system to document their interventions and efforts. Key Words: Hospital Information System (HIS),Pharmaceutical Care, Documentation
