The relationship between Eating During Hemodialysis session with dialysis, adequacy, biochemical indices and nutritional status , a cross sectional Palestinian study

Background: Hemodialysis (HD) patients frequently exhibit poor nutritional status and  inadequate dietary intake. Eating during HD sessions  have the potential to increase diet intake, but have been linked to Intradialytic hypotension IDH and dialysis inadequacy, making this practice is debatable and urging for further research. Methodology: A total of 264 HD patients were recruited in the study. Newly developed and validated questionnaire was used to assess the eating practices during the HD session; the questionnaire consists of five domains; hospital policy and instruction, the eating practices, eating time, eating position and types of food. IDH was defined as a reduction in systolic blood pressure of at least 20 mm Hg. Dialysis inadequacy was determined using the ultrafiltration rate. Malnutrition was identified using the renal inpatient screening technique (renal iNUT). Biochemical indices were extracted from the patients file.  Result: The majority of patients reported that they did not receive instructions from the medical personnel regarding eating during HD session, 63% of the patients always take meals during the HD session. Eating during an HD session was not associated with Dialysis inadequacy, incidence of IDH, electrolytes abnormalities or malnutrition. Significant relationship was found between eating during HD session with better food intake diversity and higher number of meals. Conclusion: The study revealed that eating during HD sessions was not associated with negative clinical outcomes, while it improved the food diversity and number of meals. The impact of eating during HD sessions on dietary adequacy, quality of life, and psychological aspects need further research.
