This research tackles the translation of Palestinian dialect from Arabic
into English in Ibrahim Nasrallah's Time of White Horsesin tandem with
stressing the importance of oral tradition and its employment in
Palestinian literature. This research analyzes the ST dialectical utterances
for their functions as well as their historical, social, and cultural
implications. The study proceeds to discuss translation strategies used to
deal with dialect and how these strategies affect the implications and
messages encoded in dialectical usage. This study demonstrates that the
majority of the dialectical utterances are domesticated by the means of
standardization. Thereby, the study contends that standardization of
dialectical utterances blurs the national identity of the text and hurdles the
functions meant by the employment of Palestinian dialect. Finally, this
study stresses the dialect's role in transmitting the Palestinian oral
tradition and the way it resembles dialect in its embodiment of different
historical,social, and cultural implications.
