title: Mentoring accommodation spasm in the era of modern technology Workshop

Description: Accommodative spasm is defined as a greater-than-normal accommodative response for a given stimulus or demand. The etiology of this disorder is not chronic it has a functional effect on patients’ daily activities. Symptoms and signs included blurry vision, headaches, ineffective spectacle correction, esophoria, and unstable quantitative responses on examination. Treatment of accommodative spasm did not follow a particular protocol. Treatments that have shown to provide a great success were cycloplegics, miotics with plus lenses, minus lenses, bifocal, vision therapy and ocular occlusion. Many researchers and clinicians did not recommend the use of cycloplegic agents due to the discomfort imposed on patients. However, in accommodative spasm disorder, cycloplegic agents are highly favored to break spasm quickly and may be more cost-effective compared to other conventional therapies. Participants in this workshop will review and discuss an actual narrative sample, and they will learn to identify the strengths and shortcomings in each. Methods/Issues: Some optometrists and optometry students had no opportunity to identify the newly provided methods of eye examination, and which skills in examination could be improved. Newly graduated optometrists were often did not pay attention to early detection and treatment of eye accommodation issues. It seems a mysterious and intimidating process. Simple treatments like meditation, relaxation, or prohibition of the near work allow prompt recovery from accommodation spasm. For students, reading glasses could be used. Another treatment is eye drops that can be used to break the focusing cycle. When people suffer from symptoms frequently, sometimes eye exercises were prescribed. Results/ Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, participants will be able to Assess the steps of their current eye examination, and starting to use the tests that have been excluded from the process, To develop a process to inform the younger optometrists of the complexities of eye refraction, through mentoring extensively the more complex sections of accommodation issues, over the substantial cases. Frame epidemiological data in ways that will be most clear and convincing to patients and examiners Conclusions/ Strategies, Methods, Models, Examples: Both eye drop therapy and regular eye exercises are a great tool in controlling accommodative spasm
