Detecting Bias in Trump's Tweets: Trump Peace Plan as a Case Study

This study seeks to identify the extent to which the discourse of Trump Peace Plan—disseminated via Twitter—denotes ideological biasness. To achieve that, the current research employs Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to all the presidential tweets during the study period. This paper, thus, attempts to answer the following questions: what is the image drawn for the social actors involved in the discourse?; and what are the rhetorical strategies that have been applied to shape this image? The study period extends from the release of the economic portion of the plan in June 22, 2019 through the release of the political portion of the plan in January 28, 2020. Fairclough's Model (1993) is adopted in analyzing the lexical choices through the related discourse. In general, this study concludes that the presidential discourse—via social media—involved several substitutional strategies that portray the Palestinians unfavorably. Conversely, the Israelis and the U.S. administration are positively depicted. They are shown as peace initiators—unlike the Palestinians. Consequently, an ideological biasness that lacks historical contextualization is found in favor of Trump's Peace Plan advocates.
