This research paper is an attempt to investigate the topic of verbal similarity in Imam al-Razi Tafsir of “Mafatih-ul-Ghaib” in terms of his approach of exploring the verbal differences between the similar verses in the Quran and then analyzing his approach according to the analytical and critical methods.

The study comprises two parts, the fir part investigates the foundations upon which Al-Razi relied in directing the verbal similarity, and the second part discusses the different views that criticized his approach.

The study concluded that Al-Razi was - in general - taking into account the two main pillars in the science of directing Verbal similarities, namely: stating the differences between similar expressions, and stating the suitability of each word for its context. However, he is criticized to restrict himself in many places by explaining the linguistic difference without linking it to the context and denying the existence of any difference between some of the verbal similarities. These defects do not detract from the value of Imam Al-Razi, nor his effort and creativity in this field.
