Abstract

The research sought to study the impact of covid-19 cases and deaths on stock market returns in the most affected countries using panel data method, secondary data utilized from the main indexes in the countries that record more than 1 million cases (USA (S&P 500), India (BSE Sensex), Brazil (Bo Vespa), Russia (MOEX), France (CAC 40), Spain (IBEX35), Argentina  (S&P Merval), United Kingdom (FTSE100) and Colombia (COLCAP), the data was for the period from July 01, 2020, to Sep 30, 2020, and OLS regression applied to examine the growth in cases, growth in deaths and other control variables to recognize their impact on stock market returns. The research Outcomes revealed that there is no impact of growth in cases on stock market returns may be for reasons like governmental policies, the impact can vary across time based on the stage of the epidemic, and finally, the growth in stock market returns was more stable. Moreover, the research shows that there is no impact of growth in deaths on stock market returns because of deaths record as new confirmed cases and after several days (after the test of PCR (Covid-19)  that shows the result is positive) converted to a death.
