A system for online monitoring of the environment of elderly people without violating their privacy is proposed in this paper based on the Internet of Things (IoT). In many IoT applications, the JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) format is used because it offers a good level of interoperability. However, JSON uses hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) as a transport protocol, which is a request-and-response protocol. In this paper, the proposed system uses the JSON format to ensure interoperability, but uses the POST method over secured HTTP (HTTPS) to transfer sensor measurements over the Internet to an online server securely. To monitor the environment of an elderly person, three sensors are used: a motion sensor, a light detector, and a temperature and humidity sensor. In addition, an alarm push button is used. The proposed system is flexible, inexpensive, achieves good performance over an Internet connection, and offers elderly people a comfortable and secure environment. The proposed system also reduces the workload of caregivers and reduces homecare costs.
