VALUE ADDE
D MATERIALS FORM CELLULOSE EXTRACTED FROM JEFT

Prof Othman Hamed: An Najah National University

The solid byproduct of olive industry (Jeft) composed of value added polymeric materials cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin. The cellulose part was extracted from Jeft using the kraft process and bleached according to a multiage process developed at our laboratory.  The extracted cellulose powder was converted to various polymeric materials with unlimited number of commercial applications. Among the polymeric materials produced from cellulose powder are nanocrystalline cellulose, cellulose cross-linked with aromatic amine, cellulose functionalized with aromatic amines, cellulose plastic with antimicrobial properties for food warping and cellulose supported palladium catalysts for forming C-C and oxidation. Nanocrystalline cellulose is a novel non materials with wide range of application from food to pharmaceutical and construction. The cellulose amine polymers showed excellent efficiency toward adsorbing toxic meta ions form waste water.
