The city of Tulkarm, Northwest of the West Bank, is facing many environmental challenges that affect the health and wellbeing of its residents. There are multiple sources of pollutants that are deteriorating air quality such as, queries, heavy traffic, and an Israeli industrial complex (Gishouri) just west of the separation wall. In this research the authors investigated the air quality in the city by measuring the particulate matter concentrations in four locations in the city: the first location is near a stone cutting and concrete mixing area; the second location is downtown where there is heavy traffic most of the time; the third location in near Gishouri chemical factory; and the fourth location is in relatively “clean” suburb south of the city. At the same time, the lung functions of selected residents in these locations were tested using a spirometer. The results show that the lung functions were the worst in the first location (quarries) followed by the third location (Gishouri) followed by second location (downtown), and finally the best lung functions were in the fourth location (the suburb).
