Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of an educational program based on advanced organizers in critical thinking in science among the ninth grade students in the public schools affiliated to the Directorate of Education in Tulkarem for the first academic year 2016/2017, by answering the following two main questions:

  • What is the impact of employing the strategy of advanced organizers in critical thinking in science among the ninth grade students in Tulkarem governorate?

In order to answer the study questions, the experimental method was used in its semi-experimental form. The study was applied to a sample of ninth grade students, consisting of 104 students, who were enrolled in four divisions of two schools, a male school and a girls' school. (52) students with (23) students and (29) students studied the chemical reactions unit using the advanced organizer, the control group (52) students (24) students and (28) students studied the same unit in the usual method.

To achieve the objectives of the study and data collection, the following tools were developed: analyzing the content of the chemical reactions unit from the scientific concepts, the teacher and student guide in the chemical reactions unit prepared according to the strategy of the advanced organizers, testing the skills of critical thinking. The validity and reliability of the tools were verified before applying them to the study sample. Data were then analyzed to reach the results using SPSS. The results of the study showed the following:

  • There is a statistically significant difference at the level of (α = 0.05) in the average performance of the experimental and control group in the test of the the test of the post-critical thinking skills due to the teaching method, and in favor of the experimental group student's using the advanced organizers compared to the usual method.
  • There was no statistically significant difference at the level of significance (α = 0.05) in the average performance of experimental and control group students in the testing of post-critical thinking skills due to the gender variable (males and females).
  • There was a statistically significant difference at the level of significance (α = 0.05) in the average performance of the experimental and control group students in the post-critical thinking skills test due to the interaction between teaching method and gender, and in favor of the female experimental group.

Based on the results of the study, a number of recommendations and proposals were included, including: And the holding of training courses and workshops for teachers on the building of the advanced organizer and how to employ them in learning, because of their role in providing students with the right scientific concepts and the development of critical thinking skills.
