Course Description

Behavioral medicine is an interdisciplinary field combining both medicine and psychology and is concerned with the integration of knowledge in the biological, behavioral, psychological, and social sciences relevant to health and illness.

This course provides an overview of the development & the integration of knowledge in the biological, behavioral, and psychological and social sciences that are relevant to health and illness.

The focus of this course is the basic theoretical and practical aspects and complexities of how human behavior of both of medical professionals and their patients affects health and health care. The course will highlight ways in which relationships and the understanding of human behavior is at the core of medical care and is significantly impacted by the cultural background, history, and current status of the patient and the self-awareness, and attitude of the health professional.

Course Objectives

1.Knowledge and understanding:

1.1. Describe the main theories and models related to Human Behaviour  

1.2. Understand the body/mind connection including the relationship between thought, emotion and behaviour

1.3. Understand health related behaviours at the individual and community level

1.4. Become familiar with theories and methods of behavioral change that effect health promotion, prevention and treatment.

 

1.5. Analyse individual decision making related to health at the individual and community level.

 

 

2.General and transferable skills:

 

2.1. Evaluating the impact of human behaviour and decision making in the health field in promotion, prevention, and treatment.

 

2.2. Producing better health outcomes and reducing the excessive and inappropriate use of medical care by better understanding human behaviour

 

 

 

3.Intellectual skills:

3.1. Understand the neeed of medical professionals need to use methods supported by evidence/based and values/based practice related to human behavior.

3.2. Observe and evaluate behaviour, and identify antecedents and consequences in behaviour chains related to health and treatment.

3.3 Analyse and evaluate research investigations relating human behaviour to health

4.1. Incorporating the principles and processes of human behaviour to public health strategies.

4.2. Enrich professional understanding by providing a new perspective on human behaviour.

4.3. Demonstrate the ability to help medical professionals self-relfect and better understand the ways in which their own behavior affect their patients and the quality of  care.
