Course Description

Waves and Optics is a first introductory course in optics for physics students. It begins by explaining the dual nature of light and presents the different branches of Optics. Geometrical Optics is introduced in the first part of the course including light reflection, refraction, dispersion and image formation by lenses and mirrors. Few optical instruments are introduced including telescopes and microscopes. The second part deals with the wave nature of light and goes in further details of light interference, diffraction and coherence. Interferometers are then presented. Light reflection and refraction are treated from the point of view of electromagnetic effect. Light polarization is discussed in addition to preliminary introduction to nonlinear optics and waveguides and their role in optical communication

Course Objectives

understand the dual nature of light.

implement the geometrical optics laws such as reflection and refraction to explain some natural phenomena.

understand the limits of the geometrical optics.

implement the geometrical optics laws such as reflection and refraction to explain some natural phenomena.

develope the concept of electromagnetic wave and light polarization.

understand diffraction and inteference based experiments.

introduce advanced elements of interferometry.

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

prepare the student for advanced topics in optics such as laser physics.

give the student a solid theoretical background in the above mentioned topics needed for posterior lab. work
