Course Description

 

This course builds on the “Basic Techniques in EFT” and aim to equip prospective English teachers in Palestine with the pedagogical competence in teaching writing skills in English, and also in teaching the systems of English vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. In addition, the course offers a broad introduction to contemporary theories o of language teaching methodology, with special focus on communicative language be introduced to diverse teaching methods and approaches to teaching English as a second or foreign language.  Strengths and limitations of each teaching approach will be explored.

Course Objectives

     As for the “Basic Techniques” course on which this builds, a contribution of l, demonstration of techniques (e.g. using youtube clips), and task-based workshops activities,  involvinggroupwork, will be used in the course.  Cooperative learning and classroom discussion will be emphasized to account for the complexity of variables in ELT education.  These strategies will be aimed at developing students’  thinking and enabling them to make appropriate links to classroom practice in schools.  Students will be required to read widely and become familiar with the relevant section of the English for Palestine textbooks.

  1. Demonstrate awareness of issues, approaches and techniques pertinent to teaching and learning of writing skills, as appropriate for Palestinian school context.
  2. Demonstrate awareness of issues, approaches and techniques for teaching grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation in the Palestinian school context.
  3. Demonstrate a critical understanding and knowledge of important approaches and methods to teaching English
  4. Apply this understanding and knowledge to appropriate methodology in the Palestinian school context.
