Course Description

The course introduces basic knowledge of the nervous system as well as the specific central and peripheral neural regions involved in speech and language processing especially sensory, motor, and cognitive processing. The course also focuses on studying neurogenic speech & language disorders caused by neurological disorders especially strokes. The course provides familiarization with diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of the various speech and language abnormalities associated with various types of aphasia, motor speech disorders, and related disorders.

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences
  • Recognize the neuroanatomic & physiologic components of the nervous system involved in speech and language processing.
  • Understand the various types of aphasia and motor speech disorders, associated disorders and neurocognitive impairments.
  • Develop the ability to differentially diagnose the aphasia syndromes as well as motor speech disorders.
  • Apply the necessary evaluation methods for neurogenic speech and language disorders as well as associated neurocognitive impairments.
  • Apply the specific therapy procedures for the different types of aphasia and motor speech disorders.
