Course Description

This course provides an overview of the counselling profession. The conceptual framework of counselling is examined along with historical, theoretical, and legal-ethical issues. Discussion focuses on how the novice counsellor approaches situations, uses skills, and develops a unique human-to-human relationship with clients. Topics such as spirituality, philosophy, diversity, and post-modernism are woven into these discussions. Research and emerging trends also are considered.

Course Objectives

Once this course is completed, students are expected to be able to: 1. exploration of the historical perspectives and philosophies upon which they are based.

2- Theories to be addressed include Classical Psychoanalysis, Individual Psychology, Analytical theory, Person-Centered Therapy, Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Existential Therapy.

3- The relationship between specific theories and their counselling applications are examined in detail.

4- Case study approaches as a part of conducting therapeutic interview are combined with counselling practices to demonstrate developing strategies working with individuals.

5- Examine the dynamics and major approaches to group counselling with emphases on starting a counselling group, leading groups effectively, and evaluating results.

6- Support and self-help groups are covered along with the ethical issues unique to group settings. Program planning and development in agencies, schools, higher education, and private practice are covered.

  • A.3- Describe the role of the Nurse as a member of the mental health care team.
  •  A.4- underline enough knowledge about providing care for individuals with psychological disorders.
  • A.5- Identify relevant research findings related to Counseling and interviewing skills.
  • A.6- Discuss ethical and legal parameters related to Counseling and interviewing skills
  • B- Intellectual Skills.

 

        B.1. Assess and differentiate between normal and abnormal behavior by individual and group modeling in the class.

       B. 2. Communicate with collogues by proper ways of communication such using active listening technique.

      

       C- Professional and practical skills

       

           This course is designed to fulfill the theoretical part and some modeling skills in the class.
