Course Description

This Course introduced students to the individual adult client with common alterations in
health status. The Program is designed to give a broad general background in the care of adults
who have medical and surgical problems. Students are guided to examine terminology, the
pathophysiology of common causes, specific diagnostic procedures and medical management for
each specific alteration in health status. The Nursing Process is the framework used to deal with
each health problem whilst the principles of Holistic Approach are emphasized during the care of
the nursing client. These courses focus on management of cardiovascular, respiratory,
hematology systems disorders, burn, shock and multisystem failure, in addition to Pre- and Post-
Operative Care. It will introduce the principles of nursing assessment, the standardized nursing
diagnoses amenable to nursing, nursing interventions and the criteria for evaluation. Emphasis
will be placed on a Holistic Approach during the care of nursing clients. Finally, the course
focuses on the comprehensive Delivery of care through the use of the Nursing Process for patient
who have been hospitalized for Complex, Acute or Chronic Conditions.

Course Objectives

1 Describe the structure and function of the organs of the cardiovascular (CV), hematology,
and Respiratory systems.
a. 2 Explain the etiology, clinical manifestations, and management of cardiovascular (CV),
hematology, and Respiratory systems dysfunction
a. 3 Describe the significance of physical assessment to the diagnosis of cardiovascular (CV),
hematology, and Respiratory systems dysfunction

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

1 Use assessment parameters appropriate for determining the status of cardiovascular (CV),

hematology, and respiratory system functions
b. 2. Describe the appropriate, teaching, and follow-up care for patients who are undergoing
diagnostic testing of the cardiovascular (CV), hematology, and respiratory system
dysfunction and or surgery.
b.3. Use the nursing process as a framework for care of the patient with cardiovascular (CV),
hematology, and respiratory system dysfunction (eg. ACS & ARDS.)
b.4. Identify the nursing implications of the various procedures used for diagnostic evaluation of
cardiovascular (CV), hematology, and respiratory function.
