This course, entitled Technical and Scientific Translation is intended for students who wish to learn about technical and scientific translation as a rising area of translation.it is such a complex interdisciplinary area that raises a challenge to translators, and students of translation. This course introduces students to issues involved in Technical and Scientific Translation and provides them with the skills and knowledge to deal with them.
This course intends to achieve the following goals:
1. Provide a relatively holistic introduction to technical and scientific translation
2. Provide students with necessary knowledge of relevant terminology.
3. Explain features and general stylistics of technical documents
4. Offer practical advice through presenting a variety of typical translation strategies to handle different translation problems
5. Provide practical activities to help students practice their skills and familiarize them with the process of technical and scientific translation.
By the end of this course, students are expected to:
1. demonstrate basic understanding of the theoretical knowledge of this area of translation
2. be able to identify the textual features of technical and scientific documents
3. be able to translate accurately and comprehensively English scientific and technical documents into Arabic
4. analyze the needs of the target audience and the purpose of translation while making translation choices
5. identify, understand and become familiar with terminology, word and idiom usage, writing style, grammar, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of such scientific and technical documents.
