Course Description

Developmental Psychology is the branch of psychology that is concerned with the growth and differentiation of human beings from conception till death. Developmental Psychology includes theories about the formation of intellect and cognition, emotion, personality, behaviour and morality. Developmental Psychology addresses normal development as well as neurological, genetic, intellectual and emotional disturbances that are revealed in childhood and effect individuals over the life span.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, the student will achieve systematic knowledge in the following fundamental areas:

 

 

1.Knowledge and understanding:

1.1. Knowledge and  understanding of the concept of development as a hubric for the study of psychology.

1.2 Familiarty and understanding of the theories of human development including cognitive, emotional, moral and psycho-sextual by Piaget, Erickson, and Frued.

1.3. Knowledge about the four main stages of human development and the specific developmental milestones and challenges represented at each stage. 

1.4. Familiarity and understanding of the major developmental disorders (neuropsychological) that affect individuals throughout the lifespan.

1.5. Be familiar with current ethical dilemmas of working with vulnerable populations including reporting of child abuse, and special protections in confidentiality.

2.1. Familiarization with theories in Human Development

2.2. Awareness of Diagnostic Categories of Developmental Disabilities

 

 

 

 

3.Intellectual skills:

3.1. Understand the need to understand human beings within the contxt of their personal development in the areas of  intellect, emotion, behavior and morality.

3.2. Demonstrate awareness of the four major stages of human development and how they affect individuals in a unique but chronologic manner

3.3 Analyse and evaluate specialized considerations when addressing issues of evaluation, practise and research involving vulnerable populations such as children or those with developmental disabilities.

 

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

4.1. Incorporating the knowledge of the theories of development into strategies for managing services for individuals across the span of development

4.2. Enrich professional understanding by familiarity with the disorders of development including diagnostic criteria and evidenced based best practise treatment

4.3. Demonstrate the ability to address issues of child abuse and neglct in a clinical context

 

4.4. Evaluate the role of ethics and standards of practise in the field of psychological practise and reserach when considering vulnerable populations
