Course Description

This course is designed to discuss the process of maintaining blood as a fluid within the blood vessels and the ability to prevent excessive blood loss upon injuries. During the practical work, several mechanisms of coagulation involves activation, adhesion, and aggregation of platelets along with deposition and maturation of fibrin will be studies. Moreover, laboratory investigations for diagnosis and monitoring of treatment of coagulopathy will be covered. Laboratory findings in disorders of coagulation and disease states which can result in bleeding (hemorrhage or bruising) or obstructive clotting (thrombosis) are also discussed.

Course Objectives

This lab provides students with fundamental aspects of blood coagulation as a part of hematology. The normal and abnormal biochemical interactions between platelets and clotting factors are also covered as a part of physiology and pathology. At the end of this course, the students will be able to investigate, analyze, interpret and monitor results in patients with coagulopathies.

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

1. Apply principles of safety, and quality control in coagulation tests

2. Understand the basic knowledge of laboratory testing of blood coagulation and hemostasis

3. Understand the laboratory evaluation of the coagulation cascade and its correlation to patient outcome

4. Perform and explain principles and procedures of tests to include sources of error

5. Investigate the laboratory findings in hemostatic disorders in both bleeding and thrombotic states

6. Demonstrate the ability to apply ethical principles in communication and how to keep patient confidientiality
