Phytotherapy is the study of the use of plants in the treatment of diseases as drugs, it is linked to physiology and pharmacology, where it is important to understand the physiology of diseases to understand how different plant parts and chemicals may effect the body.And it is linked to pharmacology since many plant alkaloids are used as medicines, also many drug hern interactions are found and must be understood and avoided.
The aim of this course is to provide students with basic information on current phytotherapy and it’s role in medicine and pharmacy. Students are expected to learn about the most important natural supplements which are used in Palestine (local market) and in the world to treat or prevent various disease conditions.
a- Knowledge and Understanding:
a.1. To list phytotherapeutic medications used for treatments or prevention different diseases in all human body systems
(GIT, CNS, CVS, and others)
a.2. To describe clinical efficacy and pharmacological effects for these phytotherapeutic products.
a.3. To explain the side effects, contraindications and toxicity for each product.
b- Intellectual Skills.
b.1. To demonstrate the role of using phyto-preparations in therapeutics
b.2. To analyze the advantages and disadvantages for each method of herbal treatments
b.3. To compare, the therapeutic and non therapeutic uses for each product.
b.4. To measure the therapeutic activities for these methods.
c- Professional and Practical Skills:
c.1. To design the methods of evaluation and control of phytotherapeutic products.
c.2. To employ methods used to identify the forgery in phyto-therapy.
C.3. To use correct antidotes in case of overdose for phytotherapeutic products.
C4. To solve problems in case of toxicity from domestic and wild plants and toxic mushrooms
d- General and transferable skills:
d.1. Search Internet data base for diagnostic measures in phytotherapy.
d.2. Independent learning
d.3. Appreciate team work in seminar.
