Salvia species are grown wild in Palestine and they have been used in folk medicine for the treatment of diarrhea. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of ethanol and aqueous extracts from five Salvia species on the isolated rabbit ileum. These Species are Salvia fruticosa, Salvia dominica, Salvia judaica, Salvia viridisand Salvia lanigera. All prepared extracts produce significant spasmolytic effect on rabbit ileum at a concentration of 0.2 mg/ml. The greatest effect was produced by S.dominica. Further examinations were done by treating rabbit ileum with different concentration of ethanol extracts. At 0.6 mg/ml concentration; all ethanol extracts except for S.judicaextract produce complete inhibition of ileum contraction. In addition to that, our results suggest that all ethanol extracts have no influence on cholinergic receptors.
