The paper presents a national profile on traffic safety for the period 1970 to 2015, which is utilized to understand traffic safety in Palestine. Despite the difficulties in obtaining data from three different authorities, due to the complicated political conditions, national traffic safety trends have been produced. The numbers of crashes and fatalities have been generally increasing, but sometimes with fluctuations due to demographic, economic, and political factors. The relatively lower fatality rates per population in Palestine (5.8 in 2013), in comparison with other Arab countries, can be attributed to the smaller road network, the lower VKT, and the limited motorization level. However, the fatality rate of 11.6 per 10,000 vehicles in 2013 is higher than the average among Arab countries. The resulting traffic safety profile leads to better understanding of the traffic safety and shall assist in laying the foundation for a National Traffic Safety Management System in Palestine.
