The Development of Low Vision Services in an Educational Setting

Abstract

 

Objectives: To describe the process utilized in the development of low vision services at a university setting in Palestine.

 

Methods: Theoretical and clinical training in vision rehabilitation for faculty at An-Najah National University was conducted. A literature search was performed on international models adopted to develop low vision rehabilitation comptencies in Optometric Education. International, national and local vision rehabilitation services were examined through professional associations, web searches, and site visits, and utilized in the setting-up of a an educational low vision clinic.

 

Results: Entry level competencies in vision rehabilitation developed by the ASCO Low Vision Educators Special Interest Group has been integrated into the curriculum. Student clinical training involves the direct care of patients with visual impairment, where entry-level functional needs are being addressed through the full visual assessment and prescription of optical and non-opitcal aids. A multidisciplinary clinical model is being adopted by collaborating with community-based professionals in providing advanced rehabilitation services. 

 

Conclusion: The educational clinical model developed at An-Najah National University will enable graduating optometrists to provide entry-level primary low vision care that will meet the public health needs. Further evaluation of curriculum and resources is required before the integration of advaned low vision rehabilitation services.
