Schourup (2011) postulated that the marker now encodes procedural constraints on context selection. Schiffrin (1988) and Aijmer (1980, 2002), however, characterized the English marker now as a marker of text coherence. The first account is procedural; the other accounts are representational. This study brings the three accounts together. It claims that the marker now can perform a number of functions in political discourse  (IFID) that ensure text coherence. It described and analysed the marker now in a number of political speeches. To understand its functions, the study employed speech acts theory (Austin, 1962, Searle 1969, 1979, Searle and Vanderveken, 1985) and proximization (Cap, 2006, 2012, 2014) as a theoretical framework. Following that, now can initiate the intentional and attentional phases of discourse; it can also bring similar and contradictory propositions to maximize unexpectedness as it anticipates the message and increases its predictability. This, therefore, can ensure the text coherence as it can map and project the discourse parts to achieve legitimization through proximization of threat. .
