ABSTRACT

Objectives: Periodontal disease, comprising conditions like gingivitis and periodontitis, presents a significant burden globally, with varying manifestations and implications for oral and systemic health. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of gingivitis and periodontitis among Palestinian adults alongside the associated risk factors.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out between June 2023, and January 2024 to evaluate the prevalence of periodontal diseases among 288 healthy adult Palestinians who attended the Ministry of Health Dental Clinics in the northern cities of the West Bank. Data collection involved a questionnaire covering demographic, educational, and health-related information, alongside a periodontal evaluation utilizing the Gingival Index to detect cases with gingivitis, and clinical attachment loss measurement to detect periodontitis.

Results: 42.3% of participants were diagnosed with gingivitis, and 33.3 % with periodontitis. Gingivitis was significantly correlated to younger age (p value <0.0001), and irregular teeth brushing (p value <0.011). Periodontitis was significantly correlated to older age, (p-value <0.0001), male gender (p-value < 0.032), no and low income (p value=0.025, 0.004 respectively), and irregular dental visits (p value=0.022).

Conclusions: The prevalence of gingivitis and periodontitis within Palestinian adults is considered high and is correlated to risk variables such as age, gender, oral hygiene practices, and economic resources.
