Housing blocks are among the most populartypes used in modern architecture to design social housing. However, it received much criticism in Europe regardingthe social aspects of post-war housing. This study aims togain a deep understanding of the social aspects ofdesigning post-war blocks in Europe, focusing on thepotential of medium-rise blocks, such as Bouça housing byÁlvaro Siza, in comparison to globally remarkablehigh-density blocks. The main question is, to what extentcould the design of this type consider the necessary aspectsof social Sustainability, such as privacy, adaptability, andsocial contact? This study employs site visit observation, literature search, and architectural analysis of the Bouçahousing, comparing it to the Unitéd'Habitation and RobinHood Gardens. The comparison between the three caseshas provided a deeper understanding of the ideas forinterconnecting housing units to achieve social cohesion. The study's main conclusion is that Bouça Social Housingcan be considered a pilot project due to its sensitivity tosocial aspects, compared to other cases. Thus, through thecomparison with Unité d'Habitation and Robin HoodGardens, it becomes evident that Álvaro Siza proposed analternative to high-rise mass housing by developingcompact, layered row housing that fosters shared spacesand ground-level activity. This approach reflects adistinctive contribution to post-modern social housing.Concepts of this case may be replicable and help providenew ideas for future social housing design.
