Introduction: Candida auris is an emerging drug-resistant fungus that presents an important threat to global health. Despite the fact that C. auris was just found in 2009, the number of cases has increased rapidly. C. auris is capable of causing invasive infections, transmitting from person to person, and surviving in the environment. Because to its severity, transmissibility, and drug resistance, diagnosing C. auris accurately is essential for treating patients and avoiding infections. The objective of this study is to report the number of C. auris detected in a tertiary referral hospital during the period from December 2021 to February 2023.

Methods:   The (CDC) recommends that all yeast isolates obtained from a normally sterile site (e.g., bloodstream, cerebrospinal fluid) be identified to the species level so that an initial treatment based on the typical, species-specific susceptibility patterns can be administered. In our setting, the BioMérieux VITEK 2 using the colorimetric turbidimetric method is used for this purpose.

Results: During the period of study, 16 cases of C.auris were detected.81% (13) cases were male, 19%(3)were female. Most of the C.auris detected were from Urine samples (38%), followed by Sputum (31%), wound (19%) and blood (13%).Most of patient were admitted to the medical ICU(12), Cardiac ICU(1), or Surgical ICU(1) while only 2 of them were detected among patients admitted to the medical ward. Since 2021, where only one case was detected, the cases detected has increased to 12 cases in 2022. During the first two months of 2023, 3 cases have been reported.

Conclusions: Due to the lack of therapeutic options, the complexity of diagnosis, and the possibility of clonal transmission, it is essential to establish active disease surveillance in all hospitals in the West Bank to picture the epidemiological and microbiological characteristics of C.auris and inform physicians and public health authorities.

Nevertheless, it can be misdiagnosed as other species, and can spread inside medical settings.
