Biography:

Dr. Ramzi Shawahna was born in Selat el Harthiya, Jenin. He graduated from Bahauddin Zakariya University with a Bachelor of Pharmacy in 2004. He then joined Preston University and obtained an executive master of business administration (MBA) in marketing. After that he continued his graduate studies and obtained a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in pharmacy from the Islamia University in 2007. During his research, he investigated rational drug prescription, transcription and dispensing in two major teaching hospitals. In 2007, he joined the PhD (Pharmaceutics) program at the same university. The PhD program consists of a subject graduate record examination (GRE), course work of 20 credit hours, research work leading to the publication of at least 1 article in peer reviewed journal, writing and publicly defending the PhD dissertation. The dissertation has to be evaluated by at least two experts from technologically/academically advanced countries in addition to external examiners. In 2008, he obtained a CIMO fellowship and left to the University of Helsinki, Finland to conduct a part of his PhD research. Under the co-supervision of Prof. Dr. Marjo Yliperttula and Prof. Dr. Nisar-urRahman, he completed a multi-faceted project with special emphasis on Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics. During his research, he investigated drug absorption in the human intestine, biopharmaceutical classification system (BCS)-based biowaiver criteria, used the compartmental absorption and transit (CAT) model simulations in studying the risks of granting biowaiver decisions for BCS class I and III drugs. In 2008, he obtained a scholarship and joined the PhD (Pharmacology) program at Paris Descartes University, France. The PhD program consists of attending modules, conducting research, publication of at least 2 articles in peer reviewed journals (1 published and 1 submitted/accepted for publication), writing and publicly defending the PhD dissertation. During his research, he investigated drug transporters and metabolizing enzymes at the human blood brain barrier as determinants of cerebral pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. After defending his two PhD dissertations, he joined Abbott Laboratories, Daix, France, as a Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) Senior Scientist and Lab Head. He was responsible for planning, designing and executing GLP and non-GLP Pharmacokinetics and metabolism studies for different new chemical entities in the preclinical and different developmental phases. In September 2012, he joined Emory University, GA, USA, as a Research scientist and Postdoctoral Fellow. He was responsible for different clinical and preclinical projects in neuro-immunology which include developing a treatment for HIV Encephalitis and Multiple Sclerosis.
