Course Description

This course gives an in-depth treatment of the subject, with more bias to transition organometallics. Rigorous treatment of bonding and structure in main-group and, to a larger extent, transition metal organometallic compounds is presented. Descriptive chemistry of organometallics is also presented, while focusing on synthesis, reactions and applications in catalysis and organic synthesis.

Course Objectives

The course is intended to enable students to combine different skills together. In one way, the students will combine their own organic and inorganic chemistry skills together to understand non-classical coordination compounds, namely organometallics. Moreover, the students will exercise their skills in analytical and theoretical backgrounds with organometallic chemistry studies. The importance of organometallics in contemporary advanced applications of chemistry, such as catalysis and synthesis, are also targeted.  The course enables the student to know more about the state-of-the-art concepts of organometallics, and enables him/her to further study and search in the field.

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

Upon completing this course, the learner will be able to:

  • 1) Use bonding theories in predicting structure of organometallic chemistry
  • 2) Predict structure and reactivity of different classes of organometallics
  • 3) Predict mechanisms of organometallic compound reactions and fluxional behaviors
  • 4) Explain roles of organometallic compounds in catalyzing reactions
  • 5) Find ways to prepare different classes of organometallic compounds
  • 6) Use advanced methods in characterizing organometallic compounds
  • 7) Write up and present technical reports in the area of organometallic chemistry
