Discussion of biological activity at the level of the cell, including cell structure, chemical constituents, architecture, material exchange with the environment, the role of the cell membrane, major energy-generating biochemical pathways, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, control of cellular activities and basic concepts in genetics.

To give knowledge on the basics of biology starting from the cell structure toward protein production. This will include the metabolic activities of the cell and the reproduction mechanism.

At the end of the course the students will be able to:

1. differentiate among the main large molecules of the cell
2. compare and contrast the structure and function of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells including their organelles
3. explain how the cells do their metabolic activities including photosynthetic activity and cellular respiration
4. describe the mechanisms of mitosis and meiosis including the processes of cell cycle and multiplication of genetic materials
5. recall the genetic principles and concepts of inheritance and genetic disorders
6. illustrate the way of how the cell genetic information is stored in DNA and retrieved for the protein-synthesizing process
